Five Things #4 — The quieter kind

Five Things is usually a little collection of what I’ve been watching, making, discovering and looking forward to.

This one feels a little different.

The last few weeks have been difficult. My dad has been extremely poorly in hospital and, unsurprisingly, everything else has taken a bit of a back seat.

There hasn’t been much making. There hasn’t been much planning. And my usual enthusiasm for what’s next has been somewhat missing.

So, rather than skip Five Things altogether, I thought I’d make this one about the smaller things. The things that have offered a little comfort, distraction or normality when it’s been needed.

1. Watching — something easy

Nothing complicated. Nothing that requires too much concentration. Just something I can put on, curl up on the sofa and disappear into for a little while.

Sometimes switching off is exactly what you need.

2. Making — very little, actually

And I’m learning to be okay with that.

Normally I have several ideas buzzing around in my head and something half-finished on the table. Recently, the creative side of life has been much quieter.

The ideas will still be there when I’m ready for them.

3. Appreciating — ordinary things

A cup of tea. Home. A message from someone checking in. A conversation that makes me laugh. Getting into bed after a long day.

Things that wouldn’t normally warrant much thought suddenly feel rather important.

4. Learning — plans can wait

I’m a planner. I like knowing what I’m doing and what’s coming next.

The last few weeks have been a reminder that sometimes life decides the plan for you.

And sometimes the only thing you really need to concentrate on is today.

5. Looking forward to — a little more normal

Nothing grand this time.

Just Dad being better, life feeling a little lighter and finding my way back to the things I enjoy.

The making, musing and Five Things will all still be here.

For now, quieter is okay.
