There’s something rather lovely about making Christmas decorations, especially when you start with a few simple bits and pieces and end up with something that makes you smile.
This week’s little creation is a snowman Christmas tree decoration, and I have to say, I’m rather pleased with how he turned out!
I’ve been experimenting with wooden slices, and I thought they’d make the perfect starting point for a little festive character.
Starting with a smile
Every snowman needs a face, so that was my first job. A little white polystyrene ball, two tiny black eyes, a carrot nose and a slightly wonky smile. Add a touch of rosy cheeks and suddenly he had a personality all of his own.

It’s funny how something so simple can start to come to life with just a few little details.
Building my snowman
For his body, I used a small wooden slice, painted white but still showing some of the lovely natural texture of the wood.
Once his head was attached, he was beginning to look the part, although he was definitely missing something!

The finishing touches
And this is where he really came to life!
A tiny green knitted hat with a red pom-pom, a matching red and green scarf, and two fluffy white feet.
I finished him off with a couple of little black buttons.

Suddenly, my rather plain wooden snowman had transformed into a cheerful little chap, ready to find his place on the Christmas tree.
The joy of making
One of the things I’m really enjoying about crafting at the moment is seeing how an idea develops as I go along.
I don’t always have a finished picture in my head when I start, and sometimes that’s half the fun.
There are little adjustments, moments of wondering whether something will work, and occasionally a bit of glue where it probably shouldn’t be!
But that’s what I love about handmade decorations. They’re not meant to be perfect. They’re meant to have character.
And this little fellow certainly has plenty of that.
I’m already wondering whether he needs a few friends. Perhaps different coloured hats and scarves? A whole little family of snowmen might be rather lovely!
Over to you…
Do you make any of your own Christmas decorations, or have you got something handmade that comes out year after year?
I’d love to hear about it.
Made with a little creativity, a few festive bits and pieces, and a lot of Christmas cheer.
